McCulloch (Husqvarna) Petrol lawnmower Briggs & Stratton engine

I've had this lawnmower for about 8 years. It worked last week now it doesn't start. When it does work it surges a bit. I expect it's carburettor/fuel related. I've bought a new one now. Apparently the engine is a very good one.
